Hello lost Internet traveler 👋
I’m not sure how you landed here (a link in my Twitter profile, probably), but I apologize for this blog’s current state. I’m sure it’s not what you were expecting. But allow me to explain its sad, current state.
I’m a company of one, and it’s great. I determine my value, and all the money I make goes into my pocket. The trade-off is that hobbies fall by the wayside when I get busy.
2021 ended up being a lot busier than I expected. That was great, three years into full-time self-employment, and I’m thankful I’ve got good clients and a growing business even as the pandemic rages on. In response to a gangbuster year, I spent most of my free time standardizing, systematizing and automating processes. These efforts have paid off in a big way. Previously, it took between 2 and 5 hours to create a proposal for a client. Now, a complicated proposal can be made in about 60 minutes. Onboarding clients was rarely consistent and took several hours of prep work. Now there’s virtually no prep work, and the client onboarding process is consistent and efficient. The same is true for the offboarding process.
With these business processes in place, I’ll have more free time (right after I deal with the clusterfuck that is filing my taxes).
There are ideas, observations, and musings I want to share – including:
- 2021 was the first year I started openly speaking about my leftist leanings – I want to share how I moved from moderate Democrat to socialist over the course of 18 months.
- I don’t want to add employees, but if I do, how do I structure this business in a way that balances fair pay with building a rainy day fund so the business can weather a slowdown and ensure there’s enough money in the bank to invest in new tools and technology.
- I’ve done a lot of work on food security and affordable housing since COVID-19 started burning across the country. I have a lot to say about the current state of affairs and I’d really like to see the left organize around mutual aid. We have an opening to change the narrative about those “scary socialists” the media keeps talking about through our actions.
Thanks for dropping by. Come back in a few weeks, and I’ll have a better site. In the meantime, find me on Twitter. If you’ve got insights on building a business that treats its employees and contractors fairly I’d really like to hear those.
